The Art of Cosmetic Dentistry

When you hear the words “cosmetic dentistry,” what comes to mind? Do you think of something that “covers up” something below, enhancing its appearance? To a certain extent, this is true. However, cosmetic dentistry is more complex than that.
As a prosthodontist, I received years of additional training after dental school to specialize in the cosmetic (or esthetic) restoration and replacement of teeth while also restoring function and appearance. The rigorous training involved full-mouth reconstruction and esthetics, and much more. Prosthodontics is the only dental specialty recognized by the American Dental Association that includes a concentration of cosmetic and esthetic dentistry education.
What Treatments Fall Under Cosmetic Dentistry?
Generally, any treatment designed to enhance the appearance of your smile could be considered cosmetic. This could include treatments to improve the color, size or shape of your teeth, as well as position and alignment. Common treatments to accomplish these goals include tooth-colored composite fillings, individual crowns, veneers, gum lifts, straightening, and implants.
The Role of Dental Implants in Cosmetic Dentistry
Dental implants have become more and more desirable as a platform for many restorations. Implants provide an extremely stable base for the addition of crowns, bridges, and in some cases, over-dentures. The result of careful planning and restoration can provide the patient with oral function and appearance that is as good or better than their natural teeth. Many of our patients have been amazed by the positive changes they enjoy after completion of implant placement and restorations.
